On India's Independence Day, August 15th 2009, over 40 backpacks were distributed to students, grades 1 through 8, attending the M.P Upper Primary School B/G in the village of Prodduvaka in Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh, India.
Background of Prodduvaka & the School
The Krishna district is one of the oldest British administered areas of Andhra Pradesh. Prodduvaka is a grampanchayat or a small village in the Krishna District, with a population of 1,573 people, of which 41% are illiterate. Thus, the school is the primary need of the village in order to lead to development. The M.P Upper Primary School is one of the three schools in the village. It was built in 1954. Now it currently has a total of 47 students and 4 teachers. In order to help improve education, Project: One World United contributed supplies, backpacks, and words of advice to the school.
Getting Started
The event required many steps of planning, the first of which was to collect the supplies. This was done through National Honors Society and International Awareness Club at Chantilly High School. 40 backpacks and over 300 supplies were donated by the students. The next step of the process was to decide on a school that may benefit from these school supplies. Raga Kolli, a member of Project: One World United, agreed to take the supplies to Southern India as a part of her vacation there in the summer. Through her family, we contacted the school headmaster/principal and the media to organize the event.
Carrying Out the Plan
Due to the historical importance of the day, the flag hoisting ceremony was held first. All the children lined up according to grade level and gender in order to salute to the flag and recite the national anthem.
Speeches were given by the president of the village, the headmaster, and other important village officials. Project: One World United also gave a speech to the students about the importance of education. We also told them about the donation that we were giving them. Then the students were called up from by grade level to receive their backpacks. Each backpack contained various supplies such as pencils, markers/color pencils, erasers, a scissor and a notebook.
After the presentation, each student was asked to write a thank you note to Project: One World United. The headmaster of the school was very thankful to our organization for the donations. It turned out that ours was the first donation ever made to that school since it was built.
The event proved to be a grand success to our organization and we hope to continue our goal of providing an equal opportunity of education to every student in India and other developing nations! There are many ways in which we can help this school to make a difference and we hope to continue working with them in the future. This is just one school out of the many that need our help in the world so please help Project One World United make a difference today!
